Trump Wanted Iran To Unconditionally Surrender. Iran Is Now Negotiating. Trump Has Decided This Was Always The Plan.

In February, Trump said "there will be no deal except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER." In May, there is a deal. The word "unconditional" is being quietly retired. "Surrender" is still on the table, just spelled differently.

WASHINGTON — When Donald Trump launched military strikes against Iran in late February 2026, he had a clear, unambiguous, posted-on-social-media-in-all-caps vision for what victory would look like. "There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" he wrote, in a post that has since been screenshotted approximately 4.7 million times and is now being retrieved from archives by approximately 4.7 million journalists simultaneously.

It is now May. Iran has not unconditionally surrendered. Iran has, instead, submitted a peace proposal response through Pakistan. The US and Iran are exchanging fire in the Strait of Hormuz while simultaneously negotiating. Trump's poll numbers have sunk to historic lows. Gas prices are up. And the administration has quietly pivoted from "unconditional surrender" to "a preliminary framework for potential discussions."

"They better sign their agreement fast."— Trump, May 10, 2026. Two months ago the deal didn't exist. Now it needs to be signed fast. The pivot speed is genuinely impressive.

Trump also promised regime change — literally told Iranian citizens to "take over your government" on night one of the war. The Iranian government is still there. It is, in fact, negotiating. With the US. About a deal. That Trump said would never happen. Secretary Rubio helpfully explained: "Only stupid countries don't shoot back when they are shot at." The US is not a stupid country. It is currently shooting and also talking. These are not mutually exclusive. Welcome to 2026.
